Am I leaving a contract early just by ordering a supplier switch

Hi All,

My e.on fixed rate deal ends on April 1 (contracted until then). It's a great deal, but it's over now. Seems for me EDF has the best deal, but how should I time it? As even if I order now, the switchover won't happen until after April 1, am I leaving early and liable for the £30 early cancellation fee? Or should I wait until April 1 to order the switch?

No, your contract ends when you switch, not when you start the process, which normally takes 4-5 weeks. Fine to start now for a contract ending 1/4.

Cheers, I'm sure I read that somewhere before on MoneySavingExpert, but after searching for a long time I couldn't find it in the forums or in the utility articles. So, should really order now so that I'm on the crap e.on replacement tariff for the shortest amount of time.

As you are required to provide 28 days notice to end a domestic contract applying to the new supplier 27 days before the penalty period finishes is a reasonably safe strategy - if something goes wrong or things go too quickly you have a pretty sound case if you are messed around.

There is still the problem of a week or two cooling off period that will extend the actual changeover date - but skipping that is the new supplier's problem and is not guaranteed - if you were to apply six weeks before then you would not be covered if you make a complaint.

Hi Sam

As others have said, it usually takes between 4 to 6 weeks to switch supplier. Therefore, starting a switch now will mean your current tariff will have finished by the time the transfer completes.

Consequently, as you will have completed the contract, there will be no cancellation fee applied when you switch supplier.

Also, we don't give discount on the final bill when switching supplier. However, this will not apply to your current tariff. You will receive all the discount applicable to this tariff even if part of this falls within the final bill. The only discount you will lose is that for the standard product you'll be put on after 1 April and until the account switches.

the switch can take up to 8weeks ...

bg give £65 cash back 10,000 nectar points woth £50 so thats £115 for switching and try looking at the websaver 11 and if u use 6 different switching sites u will be amazed at the different answers .......because they are not accurate as theyre on the net ....

No you aren't leaving early and if there's an overlap they may hold the prices on the old tariff. I've heard other suppliers doing this even though you were made aware of the contract end date at the time you went onto it.
