I tend to book my own holidays
I prefer to be in control really, although I did cheat when I went to Ireland, I booked my cottage with the ferry included through a holiday company, well Imagine Ireland. The Very Right Honourable Lady Tarry of the Alphabetty thread-I just love finding bargains and saving moneyI love to travel as much as I can when I canLife has a way to test you, it's how you deal with this that matters0 -
I tend to book my own holidays too... I like to have the control on what I do when. (I tend to book more or less than the traditional 10 or 14 day holiday and find sometimes it works out cheaper.
I always try the local travel agents though just in case they can give me a better deal with the flights. Never have been able to though.0 -
I haven't used a travel agent in over 10 years.
Best holiday: hard to say. Possibly my last trip to Thailand.
Worst holiday: As an adult - Went to Paris for a long weekend. It was freezing and never stopped raining. As a child: every sodding time we went to Skegness and stopped in a caravan. That would be considered child cruelty these days.0 -
my worst holiday was to a well known Spanish holiday resort. My best holiday involved touring the Cotswolds and the New Forest."The purpose of Life is to spread and create Happiness" :j0

Usually I just book trips on my own. I try to get suggestions from family and friends that have been to where I am going. I don't see the need for a travel agent in most cases. But I definitely think it is important to do your research before making travel plans. Traveling from Florence to Cinque Terre by train was the longest 24 hours of my life, traveling through the entire night, freezing cold, with no clue if we were actually going to make it there. But Italy was so worth it!0

I prefare to book DIY because i like to research hotels/best locations .. but if the holiday is alot cheaper with a travel agent i sometimes book with them ( Went to Florida last year and it was cheaper to book direct with Virgin Holidays than DIY)
Best Holiday: Ah ,,hard choice ,, but i'll go with our San Fran to Vegas road trip(SF, Yosemite, Death Valley, Vegas, Grand Cannyon) ,, i loved Yosemeite the scenery was breathtaking.
Worst: Ayia Napa ,,,"Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone, and do not be troubled about the future, for it has yet to come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering"0 -
Until the last few years we had always used travel agents, either on the high street or online, but have arranged our last 2 or 3 trips to the US independently and now I definately prefer to DIY. Partly it's getting the freedom to do exactly what we want rather than what someone else has packaged up, but also I love all the planning and researching of a trip almost as much as the holiday itself...and the opportunity to do a bit of moneysaving along the way!!
Our best trip without a doubt is the tour of California and Las Vegas we did last year for our wedding/honeymoon.
The worst, I don't know...I've never had a REALLY bad holiday, but probably our trip to Cancun about 10 years ago, purely because the hotel was your typical 'looks great in the brochure but is really quite grotty in real life' let down. This was in the days before sites like Trip Advisor etc were so widely used and you really were pretty much at the mercy of what the travel agent wanted to sell you - thank god for the internet hey?!0 -
