Networking a printer

Options
Desktop PC uses Windows 7 - 64 bit.
Netbook ASUS EeePC uses XP Home Edition 2002 with Service Pack 3 - can't find out if 32 or 64 bit.

I've networked my EPSON Stylus SX515W printer to my desktop pc, downloaded the driver for this printer on to my ASUS to try and link them up but I've had no luck.

I've tried the recommendations re naming both machines with the same WORKGROUP name, ticked the 'sharing' buttons but don't know if I'm doing it properly.

I'm no 'clever-chops' with PC's; being retired I do my best, but if something becomes too technical then I'm at a loss to understand what to do next. :o

Can anyone please tell me if there's are easy to follow instructions to help me out on this one. Thanks.

The printer works on WIFI, not printer sharing.

You can download the drivers/software from the Epson website and follow the instructions so that you can print via the wireless.

    Go to http://www.epson.co.uk/Store/Printers-and-All-in-Ones/Epson-Stylus-SX515W/Drivers-Support;jsessionid=FF45CB84A138907DEFB7DF670861FE1E.acc8-new and download/run the EpsonNet Print (22 November 2010) drivers/software.

  • ... I understand you - wifi and not print sharing. That's me a step forward thanks steve1980.

I did download the driver from Epson and it still didn't work. It downloaded the 32 bit version and perhaps I should have installed the 64 bit - could that have made a difference? As I say, I can't find out what 'bit' the ASUS uses. On my desktop I click on computer/properties and it tells me it's 64 bit, but not on the ASUS netbook - is that anything to do with the fact it doesn't have a hard drive (which might seem a silly 'blonde' question), but I've gone through my life asking daft questions, so what's another one?:(

It will be a 32 bit system.

Have you not got the manual? It should tell you exactly how to install it wirelessly. You normally have to run the installer, connect to the wireless router, then plug in the USB cable to finalise the settings etc.

Asus netbook deffo 32 bit XP Home.
And it will most certainly have a hard drive, it wouldn't have anywhere to store XP (or anything else) if it didn't. What your netbook doesn't have is an optical drive (DVD/CD).

  • steve1980 and is doesn't explain about networking a printer! I did as you mentioned - connected the cable - nothing, zilch etc. Thanks for confirming it's a 32 bit and thanks for your help about wifi too.

Macman - I thought it had a Solid State Drive, as opposed to a hard drive - sorry I just meant it's different - not the same as the desktop - you see what I mean about not knowing much about technology.

I expect it's just a matter of time before something clicks and I realise what I'm 'not doing' properly.

Thanks to you both for helping me so far. xx

You attach the printer to a PC via a USB cable set it up and then join it to your wireless network then it is networked as it will have an IP address and you can connect to it.

  • Thanks to GetRealBabe and diable but no luck. I've taken up both your suggestions ie, put in a cable and used instructions from fixya.com - even found the installation instructions from my Epson printer to connect to wifi, but ASUS doesn't pick up. The wee netbook prints when the USB cable is in, but doesn't recognise that it's networked. I'm going to have to give up. At least I have my desktop networked to the printer so that will have to suffice.

Sincere thanks to everyone for offering me the help they have - I really appreciate it. With best wishes - xx
