Renting with pets

I am in the same boat, as a tenant with two cats, various guinea pigs (who are always in the garden) and a few aquariums.
We have been finding it difficult to find a landlord who will accept them this time round as there is such a demand for rental properties in our area, that landlords can afford to be choosey.

The cats have their claws clipped, have two scratch posts (one of which cost £50-odd and is massive), are very well behaved. Hard to prove it though isn't it, they just have to take our word for it.
Could you ask your current LL to provide a reference of you good T like nature which includes you pets?

Yeah we could, but trouble is if we're up against other people who don't have pets, the LL will often go with them anyway!

Our pets have never caused any damage. Even in the remotest chance they did, we'd get it fixed out of our own pocket then just get the full deposit back.

I appreciate not all pet owners are like us though :(
  • I'm also having problems finding places that will take pets - agents seem to say they'll check with the landlord then never call back.

I'd love to find a suitable private rental, but there don't seem to be many of them around.
  • My husband and I haven't really had a problem with renting with a dog (and three goldfish). We've just been upfront with letting agents. They've either asked potential landlords if pets were permitted, or have made us aware of properties coming onto the rental market that accept furry friends.

Previous tenants in our current house had three dogs so the landlord was quite please we just made a query about renting with one!

Our rental property was on the market last year but wasn't selling so my husband queried if we could rent it and it was on the rental market within 24 hours (with lots of interest). The landlord is willing to sell to us in the future, something that we have plenty of time to think about - price-permitting ;)
  • Just to say I've had some good luck and found a place that's happy to accept cats. It was hard work, but it's good to know there are places out there that accept pets.
