Retailers pay a flat fee to their bank for every Visa Debit transaction they process. They don't do it for free, they pass the cost on to you in the transaction charge.

Beware how you pay for foreign cash..... there’s another possible hidden charge at bureau de change. All credit cards and some debit cards, including Barclays, Lloyds TSB, Natwest, Santander & RBS, charge a cash withdrawal fee.


This is on this website so I now understand that this is what I am paying for, so even if I bought pounds then I would still be charged. It is the same as some hole in the walls that are at petrol stations, but they tell you upfront what you will pay. Again this is just a way to get money out of us.
I know you will say change banks, but apart from this I have never had cause to complain about my bank. So now that I know they will do this, then I will not obtain currency like this again and they have given me the £4 back for not knowing about this charge.
