High Insurance Premiums for Young Drivers

Can anyone recommend an Insurance Company for young drivers? My 17 year old son has just passed his test. Buying a car is'nt a problem, however insuring it is. The cheapest quote I can find for a car as basic as a Peugeot 106 1L is £3185.00. Any ideas?

Depending on where you live that maybe a bargain. The only real ways are to look around, and add yourself as a named driver to try and bring it down. Dont be tempted to front it though and say you are the main driver if you are not.
You will need to be realistic though, insurers dont really want him as a customer and price it accordingly.0 -
Try adding on mature named drivers.
Shop around.
Try a local broker.
You could try one of the tracker schemes like insure-the-box, ikube or coverbox. These work for some people.
But generally it is now expensive to insure young drivers.0 -
I tried the I-Kube, the quote came in around £6,000. The £3185.00 includes myself as a named driver. One insurance company told me that it would have been cheaper to insurance him whilst he was a learner driver.0

admiral multi car we had to do
Daughter is 17 ,learning in her own car Fiesta 1.25 ,she is named as main driver me and mrs occasional drivers
£1000 as a learner ,it rises by £116 if she passes test in May0 -

Aye thats correct because he would have supervision from an experienced driver in the car at all times. Once he passed though and updated his license he would of been charged a hefty additional premium.
Grats on him for passing mind!0 -
There is no such thing as cheap insurance for young drivers who have recently passed their tests.
Have a look on Parkers to find the lowest group of car, which will be something uncool, and then use some online sites to get quotes. The postcode will be the main factor as some areas are higher risk than others so insurers will charge more.
Try adding one or two older drivers (40+) with clean licences that have been held for a number of years and no convictions. This should bring it down a bit. Other tips are use ikube, where driving after a certain time is not permitted or incurs cost.
Does your son really need a car? The purchase is the cheapest bit - insurance, running costs, maintenance, mot etc all add up and if there is an accident he must factor in the excess which may well be in the region of £500+.
Only you can decide if the cost is worth it but to be honest £3k is not unusual - some quotes have been around £5k for similar vehicles.0 -
Yes of course. One insurance company told me that it would have been cheaper to insurance him whilst he was a learner driver.
He'll be supervised either by an instructor or by family members in their own car.
Do you think that makes his less of more risky that when he's passed and out with his mates?
Sorry, I sympathise, but there is no such thing as cheap insurance for young drivers.0 -
got quotes through all the usual comparison sites for my 20 year old daughter to drive my car on occasions when she is home from University. She wouldn't be driving it very often however as I need it and would be the main driver of course. Direct Line came back with a reasonable quote considering her age, she has been driving for 3 years, but with a total excess for her of £550! I phoned Direct Line to arrange the insurance but was refused point blank to do it in my name even though I would DEFINITELY be the main driver and I own the car! I was told it was because of this 'fronting' business because people have been dishonest in the past about who actually is the main driver and insurance companies are now refusing to pay out if the young driver has an accident. I didnt proceed as was told that the premium would be very high but people like us are being penalised because there are dishonest people out there. However, I did question why I had been able to get a reasonable quote online and was told they would have changed the policy holder anyway when they discovered the age of my daughter as named driver, also that the web prices are just a way of getting you to take out a policy and more often than not things will have to be changed when you get down to the nitty gritty. So beware, comparison sites are not all they are cracked up to be and be prepared for further changes to your premium. My daughter did have her own car until recently but so expensive to run for the little use it got we decided to get rid of it and thought she would be able to drive my car, ha ha! Result: my daughter cannot be insured as we can't afford it! Any advice would be welcome if there is any way to get over this (legal and honest of course)0
