Average Speed Cameras
I live and commute in an area that has recently had average speed cameras installed. First lot are along a dual carriageway with speed limits of 50mph moving up to 70mph. Probably about 10 cameras covering 8 or so miles.
Second lot are on the A13 and have a section of 50mph dropping to 40mph then back up to 50mph, this is on the London bound stretch. About 6 cameras over 5 miles (all distances approximate)
We were chatting at work about how these things work and there were two distinct opinions....
1) that you could get a ticket if you exceeded the speed limit between any two cameras so on the first stretch of road, (assuming you really put your foot down!) you could end up with 5 speeding tickets/offences:eek:
2) That the cameras worked out your average speed between the very first camera and the last one - this is what I always assumed happened but I'm used to the cameras that cover roadworks and the like which tend to have only one speed limit - but if this is the case, how does it work with the varying speed limits?
Only asking out of curiosity as due to the times I commute, chance would be a fine thing if I was to even approach the speed limits....
TIA

I *think* you can only get done once as if you were doing 80mph through the whole lot you are technically only committing one offence, I'm sure I also heard that you cant get done for the same offence on the same stretch of road
Wouldnt want to take the chance though..Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -
One would presume that the different speed limit areas will be spilt into different camera sections.
So if you sped though at the camera at say 80 each section would be separate offence.0 -
like one of these when you go past it flashes your speed up red for speeding green for good driving.
these dont give you tickets just to make you more aware of the speed limit.
they oprate on a either a laser or radar like speed camera but dont take photo's of you just make you aware of you current speed and that of the road your on.0 -

no i think they are seperate tickets.
if you sped up one road past cam 1 and got cought, then sped past cam 2 some distance up the road it is two tickets i think.0 -
Has any one or does anyone know of any body who has been issued a ticket from an average camera ?
I have had a ticket from a fixed camera and most of the guys I work with have had either that or a traffic light camera ( Fair bit of driving in my job)..but none have had an average cam ticket and so far nobody I have asked in the real world has has an average cam ticket.0 -
As far as I know, each set of cameras is linked with another as a pair. It may be the following camera, or is may be one further down the road. As such you get a multiple set of average results, each capable of resulting in a ticket.
I've heard of situations where an individual has gone through a whole set of speed cameras resulting in multiple tickets, but in the end they were all treated as a single offence.
I know exactly the speed cameras you mean on the A13 and tbh, they are a load of rubbish. The previous set up with the occasional GATSO to slow traffic down just before the junctions were perfectly acceptable. Now there's just a 3 lane bunch of people doing 48mph causing more congestion and frustration.0 -
Post #7 is correct. If there are more than two sets of cameras on one stretch then ANY TWO can be used to prosecute you. But the two that catch you must be in the same lane. http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23370879-drivers-can-avoid-speeding-ticketsby-changing-lanes.do
If you know there are only two sets, switching lanes will mean you will not get caught for speeding.
UPDATE: Wikipedia says that subsequent testing means they can be used on different lanes now

IF YOU BELIEVE THE DAILY MAIL AND WIKIPEDIA!We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
