Retrieve deleted files from external hard drive

Hi guys,

I've done a very silly thing and deleted files from an external hard drive. I have found a program that could retrieve them but I have to pay nearly £60 for the priviledge.

Are there any good free programmes out there? I don't want to part with much money as I probably won't be able to get it back if it doesn't work!

Recuva, from the same company as Ccleaner, free, find it at filehippo.

Good program, and very simple interface.

If that doesn't get everything then photorec is very powerful and can dig deeper, albeit without a welcoming visual UI.

I've not really found any other free programs that could beat the simplicity of Recuva, or the in-depth recovery of Photorec. You find all sorts of amusing stuff on second hand flash memory with Photorec, that Recuva couldn't get at. Shame on me for looking.

I ran recuva on a harddrive where my friend had ran the factory restore partition not realising this formatted and reinstalled Windows from scratch and lost all her photos. Recuva was able to get nearly all of them back (27gb) including ones she had deleted on purpose.
