a previous third party claim against them. I took on a dog a few weeks back from a friend. She has always had the dog insured but last year the dog had a scuffle with another (smaller) dog and the little dog was injured and so the vets bills were covered by my friends third party liability pet insurance.

The insurer wouldnt let me take on the existing policy and said I had to take a new policy of my own with them so when I took the dog on I did this. When my friend went to cancel her policy the insurer said she couldnt because there was a third party claim made so she would have to continue till the expiry, this summer, AND she would have to take th dog back from me? When the policy expires this summer my friend can then give me the dog but they wont be able to offer me insurance!!

Can my friend pay the final balance due on her policy and then cancel straight away so I can keep the dog (extreme personal circumstances led to the dog coming to live with me), and then does anyone know any insurer that would provide me with cover in light of the pre existing liabilty claim??
Its all a bit confusing and I really wanted to keep insurance going for the dog if we take her on as she is 7 and I know vets bills can be huge!!

Petplan were more interested in giving me a quote than answering my question of "will you provide insurance for a dog with pre-existing third party claims against it". The claim has been paid out in full and wasnt even that much considering some claims that people put in.

Any advice would be great.

  • Bump - any advice would be welcome. Can I get Liability Insurance for walking the dog or is this for registered dog walkers only?

Pet Insurance is not my area of knowledge. However, I would suggest that once the dog is in your ownership that you take out Insurance via a local vets practice. If the dog has already a 3rd party liability claim against it, new Insurers may exclude that part of the cover.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
