What would be considered a 'good walk'

In answer to your question, a lot further than we've just been.

Because a dog had been recently walked on the country road, mine was manic. The jolting on the extender was seriously jarring my knees, the trying to stay upright.

I would love to see my boy run free and get proper exercise, and interest!

I read somewhere that a dog off lead, walks 3 or 4 times as far as us, with all the darting around and back tracking. So us walking a mile with him off lead is plenty.

Breeds make a difference too. A greyhound doesn't need as much exercise as say a Springer, who could work all day.

Breed, diet, activity, stimulation- all make a difference. We've had the Lab out- we walked 17 miles, she did a lot more, off the lead and generally loving it. The Rough Collie tires easier- his best was 10-12 miles off the lead I think.
Saying that, that was a one off- a lovely lazy summer day, slow paced, plenty of stops for them to nose and drink. Generally we'd do 5-6 miles on the lead.

I measure my walks by time, not distance. 5 minutes on-lead walk to local park then 30-40 mins off lead. The amount of exercise she gets depends on which other dogs are in the park (some she will play with, others means she stays close to heel), how often she brings her ball back (yes, I have a ball launcher!) and whether there are seagulls to chase. Then 5 mins on-lead home.

Summer evenings this is repeated, but during the dark evenings we just have a 30 min walk on-lead.

Occasionally we walk the tow-path to a local supermarket, but I need someone with me to hold her while I shop. Trips in the car to local woods and beaches are rare as she doesn't travel well _pale_.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.
