Typical length of a tenancy (or fixed term)?

Hi all
Can anyone tell me - what's the usual term for a tenancy (or fixed term before a statutory periodic begins)?
I'm asking this question a bit in advance, but I like to be prepared now rather than get a nasty shock later. The situation is a bit complex:
My OH and I currently share a flat which is a statutory periodic tenancy. We're both employed on fixed term contracts. My OH has a couple of months to go on his current job, mine ends a year after that. It's likely that my OH will get a new job in a different area, and that we'll have to move. My OH probably won't be certain of the details of his new job until the summer, meaning that he has a few months un-employed or temping (he has savings to deal with this, if necessary). Therefore, OH wants to wait as long as possible before giving notice on our current flat (and moving) because he doesn't want to sign a new agreement with an uncertain employment situation.
It's also likely that when we move, we'll have to move to separate places, because OH's new job probably won't be withing commuting-distance. So that would mean that I'm likely to need a new tenancy on a new place. As I expect my current job to end in about 14 months, I'd like to know what the typical length (if there is such a thing as "typical") of a tenancy or fixed term is so that I can work out when I should aim to move by so that I can find a new flat that I can leave when my employment comes to an end.
Sorry for the long post - I hope this makes sense!
The bottom line is that I was wondering if anyone could advise about what a typical length on a tenancy (or fixed term) is likely to be?
Thanks!

Typically not less than 6 months and not more than 3 years for boring legal reasons.
More probably not less than 6 months and not more 1 year for practical reasons.0
