Sports Club Membership

Hi, This is my first post! Don't know if i've put it in the most appropriate section either!? Does anyone have any advice? I want to cancel membership of £15 per month for a sports club but am tied in for 12 months. Are there any loopholes or should I just say to them that I can't pay it. What is the worst they could do? Thanks, Fiona

  • i got out of mine by saying my partner had accepted a job abroad and i was going with him. all they needed was a letter on headed paper (my boss kindly let me use ours). and they stopped it straight away.

Unless you have a way 'to prove' one of their accepted reasons for cancelling (ie they may let you if you leave the country and use headed paper to make it look legit, as above) you may find you are actually stuck.

I'd have a good read through their terms and conditions from when you joined and find out in what situations it can be cancelled. To be honest though the majority of sports club/ gym memberships tie you in for 12 months minimum and if you just cancel your payments or do not pay it WILL end up going to court, even if it is because you cannot afford the payments. These contracts are usually very hard to get out of.

Yeah check your contract to see what it says - how many months have you left of the contract?

I would advise them of the situation and see what they say - they would be within their rights to ask you to pay the rest of the money - ie buy yourself out of the contract.
