Travel Insurance - Said they paid but now I've got a Summons! Legal advice?

Hi,
I fell whilst on a ski holiday in Jan 2010 and had to spend a night in the hospital, the insurance company paid all my expenses with no issues at all, the only thing I didnt have to reclaim was the hospital bill as I had my European card so they did not need a credit card payment for this. The insurance said they would pay the hospital direct. In June 2010 I received a red invoice from the hospital so promptly contacted the insurance company who said that they would sort it, and when I called them back a few weeks later, they confirmed it was all paid - sorted!
Today I got a Summons in the post from the hospital! I immediately rang the insurance company who have said that they paid the bill today (ummm very convenient!) but they would not send me any copies of their correspendence with the hospital.
I was mostly worried about my credit rating, not sure if the summons will have caused me any damage? When I asked the insurance company to contact the French "Tresor Public" to ensure this was all sorted and nothing would happen to my credit etc, they basically said the summons is nothing to do with them!
Arghhhhh I am fuming, I've been left with no confirmation that the bill has been paid, cannot contact the french summons issuer as constantly engaged (and I dont speak french anyway!) and I am in a panic about my credit rating, not to mention that the summons states that the bailiffs with seize goods if no payment made by Friday 11 March 2011 (3 days from now!).
Anyone got any ideas on who I can contact / get advice from??
