downloading to my computer off a DVR

Hi everyone.

I was wondering if anyone can give me any advice please?

I have a H.264 Network Digital Video Recorder and have captured some video footage i want to keep.
Now can i just put a usb cable between this and my computer and download it? I have installed the hardware off the disc that came with it onto my computer and i was wondering if this is how i download it as i am unsure.
I do not want to just have a go so to speak as i am worried about deleating what is on the footage that i have captured.
Any hyelp will be much appreciated and if you want anymore information i will gladley suppy.
Thanks everyone

Probably best to say what make and model it is - you really need to look at the user manual to know for sure how it's intended to be used.

You can try connecting it to the PC via USB and see if you can then access its hard disk as a Mass Storage Device. If you can, there should be no need for extra software on the PC - simply highlight the files that you want and copy them to a local directory on your PC. If the recordings are any length they will probably be large, and so will take some time to copy across.

    Hi fwor.
Thank you for the reply the only information i have about this is this:
It is a 4 channel H.264 network digital video recorder cctv dvr cam no particular make.
I have read the instructions that came with it but they are a bit unclear and with cctv footage on the machine i obviously would not want to deleate this.
Thank yoou any way for looking and your responce it is much appreciated.

If you copy stuff then you will not damage the original and it will remain where it is.

    Worth trying what fwor suggests

If yours is like the one that I've just taken a look at, the USB port is not designed to be connected to a PC - it is intended to be used to plug a storage device such as a pendrive into. You can then go to the DVR's Copy menu and select the recording to "Copy to USB". That will not delete the original held on the DVR.

You can then unplug the pendrive, plug it into your PC and view the file. However, depending on how recent a version of Windows you have, you may find that Windows Media Player cannot play back H.264 files. If so, the best solution IMO is to download and install the free VLC media player, which can - with some limitations.

It sounds like your camera caught a couple having some outdoor fun late one night. lmao It's surprising what some people will keep.

You wouldn't want to lose something like that now would you!

Joking aside, it could be like fwor suggests and it's not designed to connect directly to a PC. If no software came with it then that may also indicate that it isn't meant to connect to a PC to transfer video. Most devices which can connect to PC's come with software, no matter how crap it is, to make transferring the video to the PC simpler. In some cases such as Humax PVR's, it doesn't work or it's so bad that transferring is practically impossible.

So borrowing as you cannot be certain it will work, a USB drive or maybe flash memory might allow it to be transferred.

    HaHa if only A.Penney.Saved.
Sorry everyone i meant to put software not hardware that came with the equipment has been installed on my computer.
Actually i am part of a paranormal team (not pornographic team)
and obviously there is some footage that we obviously need to keep that was captured, thats why i am worried about not loosing the footage as i transfer it.
I have a feeling that i can do it just by usb to usb but thought i would just ask you all if you had any ideas before i went and done it.
Also fwor thank you for the advice but alas VLC did not work and the software i got with the equipment is not recognising the USB Stick that i transfered some footage onto.
Thank you everyone for the help anyway it is much appreciated
