OMG... the supermarkets are buying them for 88p a dozen!!!

    It's actually worse than that.

The supermarkets will be paying that for Lion Branded free range eggs.

I sell free range eggs to restaurants in cases of 15 dozen (non-lion branded) but UK laid.

I buy from a farm that used to have it's own chickens but got out because of the costs. They now buy from other farms and re-sell them to suppliers like me. I pay £0.82 per dozen so what will the farm get from my supplier.

Caged eggs are 0.66 per dozen but last month they were down at 0.38 per dozen. European caged eggs are even cheaper!

The supermarkets are not only destroying British Farms they are ruining us. I can't see any way round this. Not shopping with them means they will reduce their prices but they will pass that on to suppliers.

I know I am off topic! Can someone point me in the direction of a thread where I can carry on this rant:mad:

Newleaf how do you get your girls to stand still long enough to have their picture taken? I have tried endless times and most are blurred/out of focus etc. My 3 never stay put long enough to take a decent picture.

I mentioned this on a post in another thread. Not sure if this is the right place to put this.

If anyone has any hens and interested in getting a couple more please see this article and the Youtube link.

I am collecting 12 next weekend (£2 each) for friends. There are still about 3000 to home and they will go to slaughter on the 28th March if homes cant be found.

Anyone that wants to home a chicken please get intouch with them

I am sure there are lots of people who would love to home them. I dont think the word is being spread widely enough.

    thanks

    Hi

Just been on Omlet and saw your post. I read about this last night and wondered if it was on MSE.

It's a pity this has been put in this thread as most people don't know what an eglu is so may be put off reading this.I do think it should have a thread of its own. What about revamping the info in the pets section. Shall I try putting it in Quick grabbit while you can section?

that would be great! i am going to email jo and find out how many are left. She said they were going fast but specific numbers would be good.

I am willing to collect more on Sunday if people can collect them from nr Oswestry the same day if Northampton is too far. But I havent got the room for mass numbers so they would need to be same day or a meeting point between Northampton and Oswestry...

Edit: I have just PMd the moderator asking if the threads can be seperated.

It's a shame your thread was merged with the eglu one as it doesn't have anything to do with eglus and people who don't have an eglu might miss it because they don't feel that they have anything to contribute to a thread about eglus. Phew, that was a long sentence!

yes i am disapointed as the topics are only slightly related. My own fault for saying that i mentioned it in another thread. It does deserve its own thread but its not my decision unfortunately.

This thread has now been unmerged :D just shows the power of asking nicely ;)

Ok latest update! Just had word back from Jo. There are approx 500 girls that up to now haven't been reserved!
I know a lot of people will think it's home free but I think we need to push this more to ensure every one of them has a home. I am pestering lots of people. They have done a great job in rehoming 6000 birds!!

It will make all the diffence for anyone who can take even just one!

Will post up more updates as I get them

  • Friends of ours had a dozen. We are planning on getting chickens idc but are nowhere near ready yet having only moved in 10 days ago (plus see any of my posts about the cost of bloody heating oil = things are v tight). But, if we can find the required equipment at a decent price, we'll go get some.
