Returning damaged item bought in shop: do I need to go to shop?

I bought some bedding from a supermarket. When I opened it, it turned out to be damaged. This isn't a store I normally use - I went out of my way once to return it and they wouldn't handle the return then (customer service desk closed) and asked me to come back another day. Their customer service are insisting it needs to be brought back to the store.

Does the Sale of Goods Act let me ask them to collect/post the item back and ask them to pay the cost of postage? Not keen to take a 2nd trip out of my way. The item isn't worth much, but it's the principle of the thing

You bought the item from the shop so it's entirely reasonable for them to expect the item to be presented back to them at the shop. The fact you live miles away is not their fault.

Tell them they will need to cover your time and costs.

I have successfully asked for money to cover my petrol,on a couple of occasions,as long as you ask for the manager, and be polite.

    I had the same.
I returned a faulty item to Ikea (about a 40 mile round trip), and I asked the assistant at the service desk if they would cover my costs. She refused, so I wrote to the store manager who sent me a £20 Ikea gift card.
