JSA & Tax Credits

I was recently told by the tax credits office that because i work 17 hours per week my partner should not be receiving income based jsa. however i was under the impression as the claim is in his name i can work up to 24 hours per week.

can anyone help with this as the lady i spoke to at tax credits was very rude and made me feel like i am commiting some kind of fraud.

i dont understand how it all works so i just hand over any payslips, paperwork etc that im asked to give so if its wrong its not something i have done deliberately

i am really worried please can someone give me some advice before i have to start making phonecalls and have benefits put on hold :(

Your partner may be entitled depending on whether it is classed as a joint claim where you both have to meet the criteria, which you don't due to working 17 hours.

If one of the partners gets a job of more than 16 but less than 24 hours, the couple no longer have to make a joint claim. The other partner may still be entitled to income-based JSA, depending on the couple's income.

With you contacting tax credits do you have children and have put a claim in for working tax credits, if this is the case your partner may be could possibly sign on for his NI contributions only as income from these means will be above the personal threshold for a couple which is currently £102.75
Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.
