Ladies - how fussy are you when it comes to getting a smear done?

Just asked a female colleague if they do regular smears here and the answer is no
Apparently, they only do one if you are experiencing problems.
Ohhhh wait, she's not 30 yet so she doesn't know. I just had a Google search and found that they only test every 5 years here from age 30 to 60. Which fits in nicely for me as my next smear test would be due at age 30 in the UK anyway. OK, now I feel better. Didn't want to not be checked at all.February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
I too be very scared and I used to find it very painful and I used to spot just after having it done, but one day the Nurse said to try it on side and (parden the pun) she was in and out and I didnt feel it and I didnt bleed after , Now I dont mind having it done, a few recalls back and thank God it was'nt anything..hth.Don't sweat the small stuff, Its all small stuff.0

This has just prompted me to make an appointment!
But just wanted to ask. Previously I have had my smears done in New Zealand, my home country, and they have you lay on your side, and go in backwards, with your legs closed.. far more dignified than having your legs wide open and all your bits on show.
Anyone had one like this in the UK?0 -
Sorry I know I'm a guy and therefore don't really belong here and haven't bothered Reading but after a chat with my OH the other day I've got a few questions. Firstly why don't men have to have regular prostate checks in the same manner and why do women ever let students watch? If I was having any sort of medical treatment on my bits I'd never let a bunch of students in!0

I haven't been since I was 24...I'm now 33....:o
I'm really self-conscious, especially because I'm, shall we say..a large woman. The thought of of lying there looking like a beached whale with my bits exposed fills me with dread! I know it's stupid and I really ought to go. I'm going to try and be brave!
Last time I had it done was my first time in the UK, and the doctor asked if a student could "observe", so I said yes because I was afraid to refuse....Cue this tiny little bespectacled chap, who must have been half my size, hovering over my bits. To make matters worse, the doctor was actually giving him directions and asking questions. lol "So, can you tell me what this is?" "No, higher, yes...no, a bit more to the left..." Aaaaaaaaaaargghh!!
I've never been so embarrassed, and it took aaaaaaaaaaaaaages!0 -

Some info about prostate cancer screening:

I think, because it's easier for a guy to self examine for this, it is left up to the individual to ask for a full screening test (I'm just guessing).
As for students, well why not? They all have to learn somehow and the text books can only teach them so much. They aren't looking at my bits to get aroused, they're looking at them in a strictly medical and professional manner.
I've had students watch various different procedures, ops. From smear tests, to having a wisdom tooth removed. These will be the peeps who will be performing on you (and/or others) later anyway, so I'd rather they actually learnt how to do it properly.
I can understand why some people wouldn't want students watching though, and they are within their rights to refuse to let them watch.February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
They all have to learn somewhere! If none of us let them in then there would be no more trained dr's and we would all be dying of cancer!! LOL.0

I don't really mind students watching, how will they learn how to do things if they aren't able to observe doctors and nurses working?
I don't know why men don't have checks, I'm guessing because the prostate isn't so accessible unless you do an invasive test. I may be completely wrong.0 -

Book an appt today and be clear with the doctor/nurse that you don't want anyone observing.
Go on, you can do it! The embarassment is far better than leaving cancer undiagnosed. Book it now, go on, you can do it. xFebruary wins: Theatre tickets0 -
Well, I just called!!
Turns out you don't need an appointment, you just turn up during the clinic hours (or so the rather flushed-sounding bloke on the phone told me...lol)....I shall give myself a kick up the backside and go next week!0
