Oh they are awful! At our doctors the nurses do them, I had mine about 3 weeks ago and I've just found out I've not got to go again for 3 years - woohoo. Ever since I started having them I've been alternating between 6 month and yearly repeats because of abnormal cell/changes.

I have had so many but it really doesn't get any easier to go, I found lots of reasons to keep putting this last one off. If I were you, I'd go to the smear clinic, keep telling yourself that they do this all the time, it'll only take you a few mins and then big bar of choc and/or flowers as a reward and job done for the next 3 or so years.

    Be brave :)

Hate it. Ugh! I only had one done last time, as was getting nagged at by everyone to go, as it had been years since my last. This was just after Jade Goody died, so I freaked out, and eventually went.

i hate hate hate hate them.

i'm sorry but to lay there legs wide open ( blanket over legs of course) with a nurse heading towards you with a huge freezing cold metal thingy does not make me relax. it isn't natural. they may be used to do loads a day and have seen alsorts, but this is my body, i'm a private person , i have feelings, i may of had children but that doesn't mean i'm more at ease with the whole process .

i freak right out, i've never had it hurt or anythign bad come back but that still doesn't mean i'm calm about the whole process.

my last one i needed almost councilling to even book it. then when i did book it, the nurse cancelled , i was devstated as i'd built myself up to do it.

i have to have a female nurse tho, even tho sometimes in my expoeriance i have found male nurse and midwife so much more relaxing and generally have a more caring nature. for this because i'm sure a state a female will only do.

i appreciate it can save ur life and it is important, but that doesn't mean it's easy to go through.

Get it done! I've had cervical cancer and the subsequent treatment, if you can avoid it then please do. Remember Jade Goodie?

If nothing else convinces women to have a smear test when called, that should!
    Don't end up like her.

Of course having a smear isn't pleasant.
But, when you consider what the alternative might be, you just have to bite the bullet.
It's not like you have to have one every week.

As your surgery has been good enough to give you the choice of who does the test, just sit and have a think about what you'd prefer and then pick up the phone and get it sorted.

Ok. I've phoned. Seems the smears are now done by the nurses. The clinics were full for the next couple of weeks and the only time they could fit me in was when my period was due. (I sooooo wanted to see that as an omen not to bother. :rotfl:)

Anyway, I got a separate app for the 16th. Feel sick already. :undecided

Thanks everyone, I knew I needed to go but just needed a wee bit of backing, wuss that I am. Appreciate your replies.

At least they don't use the medieval looking torture devices to do them now. Mine have always been unpleasant experiences. The last nurse to do it was really nice, so felt comfortable for once, rather than tense.

I could have written this. Exactly how I feel too.

One nurse couldn't find my cervix, so after ages of probing, told me I had to come back so someone else could have a go. I was not happy. :(

I'll only have mine done by our female doctor as she's the only person I feel comfortable with poking around at my nethers apart from childbirth.

She does it when your lying on your side. SO much easier then lying legs akimbo I'm imagine, but saying that, I've never had a smear done lying on my back.

We are actually meant to book with a nurse, but I never do.
