i'm afraid i'm one of those that havent had a smear in years, even tho they remind me every year. its female nurses that do them at our gp. but they are always so painful when they put that metal thingy in, then they try again with a smaller one, why dont they use smaller ones all the time ?
think i've had 2 or 3 years in my lifetime, and i'm 40

tbh my biggest worry when I go for a smear is that they don't see my very comfortable granny pants :rotfl::rotfl:

Just a word to the wise though, I always thought the best time (in relation to your period) was two weeks after the start of your period.

I have always had mine done at the Family Planning Clinic and it has always been a male doctor. I don't care who does it. Prevention is better than cure. I think Id find it strange having a woman do it.

Definitely go and get one regular. I had one that showed abnormal cells. I had a biopsy and they were not cancerous but I had them frozen off just in case. I had no other symptoms and no idea that anything was abnormal down there. I've had normal smears since then.

The nurses at our doctors surgery do them. They run a well woman clinic for smears and other women's stuff, or you can just make a normal nurse appointment.

When I had my first smear, I was nervous and the nurse was making polite chat to put me at ease. While she was busy, she asked if I was going on holiday and I said no as I was moving home soon. She asked where, and I said the street name. She said "it's not number .... is it?" and I said it was. She said "I live opposite so I'll be your new neighbour." Not the best way of meeting the neighbours :o :rotfl:

Also had one at my six week check after my son was born. I was in position on the couch and he was in his car seat on the floor and he started crying. The nurse picked him up and plonked the car seat on the end of the bed by my feet. I said "well that's not a very nice view for him!" and she said "look James, that's where you came from":rotfl:
Here I go again on my own....

Is anyone else annoyed that you have to be 25? I know cervical cancer is apparently rare for under 25's but you never know. I've read stories of people who were refused smears then had cancer. :(

Yep! I am am 24 in July so still have a while to go.
I have had several swabs and exams since having my son but not a full on smear. I can't imagine it's any harder than when I had a coil fitted, ouch!

I am actually looking forward to get one done, for peace of mind. Cervical cancer is something that I do worry about and it would be good to know that everything is okay right now, not waiting another year and a bit. I worry that I did have any cancerous cells now then it will be too late to do anything by the time they are found.

I had my first one at 25, and she really hurt me :-(
I had to ask her to stop, luckily she managed to get it done, but it wasn't uncomfortable but actually painful
