I'd do it myself and I've got breakdown cover, but I can see why plenty weaker people wouldn't/couldn't. Although tyre fitters are meant to torque up your nuts (cough!) how many just put them back on based on their own strength. Last time I changed a wheel (friends car) I couldn't for the life of me get the nuts off, not using the standard foot long brace anyway. Had to end up using my foot/leg to loosen it off, being careful not to round it off.
I agree space savers are a bit rubbish but they're preferable to a can of foam.

Back on topic, I emailed Black circles for thier policy on how old the tyres they supply may be and was told that they could be up to 3 years, but are generally within a year or 2 old.
    Not particularly specific!

Uggh, why do car companies do this, it saves pennies and is nothing to do with space. A car company (a quality one at that) I worked at, decided for a while that they wouldn't even put a space saver in. The first we knew about it was when my colleague picked up her replacement company car and asked me where the spare tyre was. When I stopped laughing, I pointed out that the pot of glue looking stuff and the electric pump (tyre sealant) was her replacement tyre.

I think the "tyre repair kits" are silly too. I'm not keen on space savers either, but there is no way I'd want a giant hump in the boot floor.
