Travel Insurance, Automatic Renewal

Checking my credit card statement I spotted a charge from Insure and Go which I did not make, or didn't think I did. Upon calling Insure and Go customer service I was told Automatic Renewal of annual policies was included in their Terms and Conditions. Wondering how I missed this, I logged onto their web site. Automatic Renewals are included within their policy terms and conditions, but this information has to be downloaded and in my case, magnified to find and read. Automatic Renewals should be an option presented on the final summary page before purchase - a simple box to check. Instead, it is cleverly hidden. In our case no trips are planned in the near future making this a waste.

You would have had to tick a box that says "I agree to the terms and conditions".
Downloading and magnifying is not rocket science, so I don't agree you were in any way prevented from reading these or that it was "cleverly hidden".

I would suggest putting all your renewable policies in a diary of spreadsheet or whatever facility you current use for MOTs, services, insurance etc. You must have some sort of system already unless you miss every MOT, birthday and dental appointment.

For insurance you should start searching ab out a month before which gives you plenty of time to research, look for cashback adn shop around.
If you don't want your current policy to renew, my advice is to lapse by letter and spend 74p on recorded delivery.
You cannot rely on someone doing what they sau they will do over the phone and some comapnies take advantage of this.

An alternative is to not buy a renewable policy in the first place, or pay cash (I'm pretty sure you can buy thes policies from the post office or Boots these days).
I generally dont' purchase renewable insurance but I always keep a spreadsheet up to date and check it anyway.
