i-allow: selling your info

Heard about this site on national radio station (not sure if I allowed to name it). The principle is you give them your personal details and they sell it on and you get 70% of the money. Was an article in the wall street journal about it. Just wondered peoples opinions on it?

I posted about this in this forum yesterday asking the same question but didn't get any replies. If anyone knows I'd definitely like to hear your experiences and opinions.

The obvious question is "what's in it for them" the answer to which is presumably "they take a cut of the money and pass the rest to you", but beyond that I'm kind of dubious about handing control of my private information to a company whose incentive is, in the end, to sell it to other companies.

I'm already quite good about protecting my privacy. I always inspect the sneaky opt-out check boxes on internet sign-up forms and use a different email address and often fake details for services which require a one-time sign-up and have no business needing my address. Where phone numbers are required they usually get my mobile number with the last two digits reversed (I've checked and this doesn't belong to anyone else). I'm already signed up to the TPS and have opted out of the 'marketing' electoral role. In short, I've already take most of the steps they would take to 'protect' me, so it comes down to "how much money can you realistically make with this service" and "are they trustworthy".
  • Sorry I did do a search with i-allow but it didn't return anything. I think the more you share the more you make but the obvious down side is you get bombarded with marketing. Nothing worse then when you are at your supper and you get the phone call.

Their argument is you get marketing thats more tailored to you but dont know if the business model works, I suppose it depends on how many people sign up and if their information is valuable ie they are consumers of high ticket items or more money savers like ourselves.

I guess it keeps Royal Mail in work delivering the junk mail, then the empty reply envelopes.

I'm dubious about giving my personal information to anyone I don't know. Let alone companies who are going to sell them on.

If you are a member of MPS/TPS, then for the purposes of sales calls, you will have been deemed to have given your permission. The aforementioned services only cover unsolicited mail/calls where the contacting company has not previously obtained your permission to contact them.
