Hi MIL and FIL want to buy a computer for surfing, playing cds/ dvds, online shopping, skype, iplayer and games such as cards, bejewelled....
We have no idea of costs or what to look for, We are looking for value for money and maybe a bit of a waranty.
They have discounted a laptop as they will be tempted to take it from room to room and both adults are very wobbly on their feet so, could result in an accident.
We have looked at bt broadband and have decided on :-
Broadband and Anytime Calls
Any ideas please?

Broadband and Anytime Calls
- Up to 20Mb download speeds (depends on line and location)
- 10GB monthly usage
- New BT Home Hub (worth £91.90)
- Basic online security
- £29.60 a month
Any ideas please?

My first choice would be a Mac, purely because its simple and easy to use, but expensive.
So discounting a mac (£900) I would choose something with a large screen (so its easier to read / blow up the resolution) and a fairly modern spec system/basic modern.
Give me two ticks and i'll get back to you
(Also £30 per month is a little high)0 -

Very much too much , Plusnet is cheaper even if not LLU for 10gb / month. Mac is as Coolio said even more expensive than needed, and not wishing to start a mac/vs Windoze/Linux war look for a reasonable PC perhaps Win 7 2GB with 22inch monitor, with a TV card may be useful too)4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . You shouldn't need to pay anything like £30 pm for broadband and Anytime calls. BT are one of the most expensive providers around.
I agree with debitcard, have a look at Plusnet, which (if they are on a Market 1 exchange) should be able to do broadband and Anytime calls for £9.99 with the current offer. Line rental adds £11.99, so under £22 all in.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Assuming they have tried on your PC then take them to PC World see if they want to trash it, and when you get them a PC set them up a bookmark to direct them to here, and explain that Alienrik is not an ALIEN and Browntoa has no "D" in his name, and GunJack fires warning shots first, and Debitcardmayhem was in a nursing/residential home once :eek:4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Thanks for the suggestion. They are very elderly, for their 80 years, and need a reliable phone system. My household have been on Talktalk for a number of years and the phone system used to go down frequently, sometimes for days on end. They are worried about losing their phone in case of emergency.

A second hand £100 puter will do all you want, just get a 28" monitor and a HDMi & sound out video card.
For the suggested purpose your AP won't see the difference between the £100 and the phanbhoy £900
The HDMi out will allow your AP's 60 inch tele to be a monitor and play the DVD's / Video Skype / games on the big screen, and if it's in use the big monitor can be used instead.
Put you money where it will benefit the end user
