psp

My lad would like a psp and as I am going to New York next week, is it cheaper to buy here or there. Also if bought in USA is it compatible with games from UK. I have no experience of game consoles. Is there any extra bits I need to purchase at the same time and is it cheaper to buy the handset alone or as a bundle with game(s). Help please!

    1. AFAIK, PSPs are region-free

    2. I'll let you do the "math". Amazon.com are charging $175.50 (£92.50) for a "value pack", whereas Amazon.co.uk want £149.99

    3. You'll more than likely find games cheaper over there too, though I wouldn't necessarily look for them bundled wih the console. If you can broker a deal at time of purchase, then good for you.

Games are compatibale but movies are region coded in the same way DVD movies are, you can pick uo R1 movies pretty chaep on ebay so it could be a possibility.

I dont think the US ones have the same problem as the japan ones as the o and x buttons fuctions are swapped, in the UK x is select in japan o is select.
  • Hmmm. Toughie. I know the wii is region encoded. I think the PSP games are not region encoded (so technically you can buy a game anywhere and play it on a PSP and that means you can buy a PSP anywhere and buy games in your home country), drawback is that the UMD (movie disks) are generally encoded (up to the publishers to decide) so you would have to purchase the movie disks from USA. You'd need to get a UK adapter or holiday adapter. I know like someone to back me up just in case I have it wrong.

I personally would rather buy in this country (if it goes wrong you can take it back). I've had items from new just not work out of the box and it needed to be replaced or die within a couple of months. One of those freak of nature things that happen and seem to happen a lot to me.

I don't know what the saving is like but is it worth it? I'd always be worried if it broke and I had problems taking it back. Are you supposed to pay VAT coming into the country with something like that as well? I don't know just another thought that popped in my head.

I think the PSP has been out long enough for you to get good deals here.

I would go for buying games in the USA if they work out cheaper rather than the whole system.

Be good to get someone else to back up my idea of PSP region encoding.

I hope this helps a little.

The PSP charger uses 2 peices, the transformer that connects to the PSP and a cable that connect to the transformer with a figure 8 plug so just replace that with a cable with a 3 pin plug on it or buy an adaptor to convert the 2 pin to a 3pin. I use the addaptor for my jap PSP
  • Thanks for all the advice - the sensible side of me thinks that perhaps I'd better buy the psp here in the uk and pick up some games over there. Now another question, if I buy here will it be cheaper in the airport or on line or from a shop, does anyone have any idea? or any advice? THANKS!

psp games are region coded, but it doesn't stop you playing them. the issue only arises if you want to use multi-player wi-fi.
Ever stop to think and forget to start again?

    What's a multi-player wi-fi ??

if you and a mate (for example) both have a copy of the game and each have a psp you can play against each other via wi-fi (wirelessly)

What would be the problem if you did have a non-native console, and tried to play using WiFi?
