child tax credit help please

Mine and my husbands joint income for last year will be in the region of 42,000. I asked about this in another thead on here a while ago, and on that income, with only one child - it appears we lose our child tax credit family element as of April 2011.
Do I need to ring them and tell them our income exceeds the new 40,000 threshold so they can stop the payments next month? As I don't recall having to give them specific figures for a long time, as the renewal letter always just says "as long as income is below 56,000 ish, we don't need to send the form back or do anything" or do I wait for a letter and then just pay anything back they pay me from April.
Thanks.

I don't know if you lose it or not, but you do have to either complete the form or at least call them each year to give the correct end of year infomation to balance out and clear the previous year's claim. This information is then used to assess your next year's claim, and again, at the end of the year, you call back in with the exact figures to balance it out.0

Thanks for the reply, AnxiousMum.
I know for sure last year when I received the renewal that it clearly stated as long as there were no changes in circumstances and our income had not dropped below or above the amounts stated in the letter that all I had to do was check the letter and file it away - which I did, and that's all I have ever had to do since we first claimed many years ago. (our income was always over the threshold for the other tax credit benefits)
We only receive the basic £10 per week, which I believe we would regardless of income within those figures. (so they do not have an accurate up to date figure of 42000) and now the upper threshold has changed - our income does exceed the new amount, and I assume that as of April any money they pay me, I am not entitled to anymore. It's just the renewal letter comes later in the year, I think. ......... So confusing......0 -

You can phone and tell them now if you want, or wait till the renewal it's up to you, just be aware than any money you get paid after 5th April they'll want back...0
