How much Rent can one afford?

Thanks for the replies.
I know i can comfatable live on say £450 per month after rent and bills. - this would work rent out to about £600 per month.
I have a company car, so luckily there is no expense there.
I have a partner and a little one, so i think my parnter gets child tax credits etc.
I just wanted to know, if the estate agents have a rule of thumb when applying for a house. I didnt want to apply to a £600 rented house, only to be told i cant afford it on my income alone.0
