That's the kinda thing we use as examples of what can happen but never actually do!

OP if you think there's something dodgy going on then consider contacting these people: insurance fraud bureau

I think the trouble is, a lot of the time, the insurers know fraud is going on but it would cost more to investigate than to just pay out.

Thanks for all advice so far, rev, with regards the above, they were someone I have considered contacting after I've made a formal complaint to my insurers.

I appreciate there may seem little point to following the issue up. I will probably not personally gain from the situation, particularly if I have not lost out as a result of the large payout to the claimant - however personal gain is not my motivation, I simply feel the need to alleviate my frustration!

I can't help but feel a sense of injustice that my insurers have paid out such a large sum of money to someone for what was minor damage to a 12 year old vehicle with untold amount of damage to it before the incident, not to mention a brake light out. Alongside this is compensation for a claim for injury and now almost 6 months of hire car replacement costs. The latter seeing me receive a default CCJ against my name as the insurers solicitors hadn't returned the court papers in time on my behalf. This has now been resolved but prevented me from getting any credit at all for 2 months.

I agree, I think the insurance company know what is going on, after all, they have helped cultivate the climate in which such claims are currently made.

You havent taken into account what he might hit or injure on the way. Material damage costs pale into insignificance the majority of the time compared with liability for injury.

Agreed. My insurer have paid out £800 in costs associated with material damage and almost £7000 in costs associated with injury claim and replacement car charges.
