Foreign NCB lost!! Advice needed..

Hi
I spent 2 years (2008/09) working abroad (south East Asia) and used my UK NCB there when getting car insurance. Before returning to the UK, I got a NCB statement form my foreign insurer to confirm my entitlement.
I took out insurance here in the UK in March 2010, and declared my foreign NCB (5years or more/ 55% discount). The broker I used said this was acceptable and I got a well-priced quote which i was happy to go with. My policy schedule states that I have 5 years NCB. I sent them the NCB letter in the post.

Now my insurance is up for renewal, and my renewal document says that I have only 1 year NCB!!!

When I contacted the broker they said that they don’t normally accept foreign NCB and that they had gave me an introductory discount because i have never made any claims..

Can they really do this??

What can I do if they refuse to give me a renewal notice stating that i am now entitled to 6 years NCB?

In 14 years I have never made an insurance claim or had one made against me.

Thanks in advance for any advice..

You will have to submit a formal complaint in writing to the brokers. They should have told you that the NCB they were offering was a one-off deal for one year and that the real NCB was 0 years.

Because of the brokers apparent error in not advising you correctly, you have missed out on other Insurers offering you a more permanent NCB. I believe both the Coop and Aviva would have looked at your NCB in a more favourable way. Check with them about this, as you can then use this, in pursuing your complaint with the brokers.

Once you have given the brokers 8 weeks to resolve your complaint to your satisfaction, you can go to the FOS, if you remain unhappy.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
