What you have is a composite door with a multipoint locking system. You need door handles that have longer handles. They are available and make locking the door much easier. Additionally the system may be just too tight. Get on the phone to the landlord asap, they are duty bound to remedy this problem.

This is exactly what i was about to post, we have this system, asked for it specifically when we had our new UPVC door fitted.
