Hi, does anyone know if when you open a new bank account before claiming back penalty charges you should transfer all your direct debits etc, effectively closing the offending account?

It's only some banks that will ask you to close your account after you've claimed.
The standard that is appearing is that they will give you 28 days notice to do this (make other arrangements, and close your account). This should give you plenty of time to transfer any payments you make to another account.
You don't need to transfer any payments until untill you hear otherwise from your bank.
Welcome to MSE by the way. There are a lot of people here that will help you out if you feel unsure at any stage of the process. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?
