UK Debt Management

I received a phone call this morning from someone purporting to be from UK Debt Management (but also said she was rining from Future Solutions Ltd).

After confirming my name she said my name had come up as I had a credit card debt of over £1000 - when I asked her what debt and what credit card she became cagey. When I asked for details of their address she told me they were in Manchester City centre. When trying to get further details a man came on the phone.

He gave me the address as 39 Charlotte Street, Manchester and then a post code which did not correspond to Manchester - also I was given a phone number which was a London code.

Does anyone know about this company/companies - I'm worried that someone may have applied for credit in name without me knowing.

It sounds like one of these scam organisations who prey on the trusting.

Their angle is to claim that they can get you out of debt taken our prior to the middle of 2007 based on legal technicalities. These technicalities have now been proven not to work and all these companies actually do, is take hundreds of pounds of your hard earned cash, trash your credit file, and leave you in more debt that you were in to start with.

Have you registered your telephone number with the Telephone Preference Service?

I suppose that if you wanted to put your mind at rest you could obtain your statutory credit reports from Experian, Equifax, and Call Credit at £2 a pop to ensure no one has been applying for credit in your name:

    https://www.econsumer.equifax.co.uk/consumer/uk/order.ehtml?prod_cd=UKSCR
    http://www.callcredit.co.uk/stat-report-online/

Good idea to check your credit files every now and again anyway just to prevent any nasty surprises surfacing when you really want to take out a credit agreement of some sort :o

They are almost certainly just chancers - ringing random phone numbers and when, by luck, they find someone who has a debt they latch on and won't let go.

NEVER give them any of your details - definitely not your name or address and don't get fooled into giving them money up-front for anything.

You'll probably be pestered by them now that you have spoken to them at some length - they like you to talk to them - that way they learn more about you and how to angle their sales pitch.

TPS is almost certainly ineffective - the calls will actually be made from overseas where TPS have no jurisdiction - although they can take action against a UK registered company if the calls from overseas are made on their behalf. (However, the overseas caller is usually self-employed and will say he passes the contacts on on a non-contractual basis.)

Incidentally, Future Solution Ltd have a web page and are based in Dorset. http://www.fsl.co.uk/default.asp but your caller may have just been using their name without there being any connection between them.
