Transfer NCB from Van/Car to New Estate Car and keeping Van/Car insured

Hi all,

For many years I have insured and kept a car derived Van, about 10 years ago I was able to transfer it onto car Insurance from commercial vehicle policies. I also had a car which I had insured separately, but I let that go about 12 years ago.
For the last 10 years I have been insuring the vans with the best quotes either commercial/domestic third party F&T. I have also been a named driver on another persons comprehensively insured 5door car for the last 5 years.

I have had a full licence from the early eighties and never had an accident or claim, neither has the policy holder on which I am a named driver.

I have acquired an estate car and I wish to insure it fully comp. I understand that I cannot share any NCB that I have from the van.

If I keep the insurance on the van £140 inc NCB and start a new insurance on the estate Nil NCB it will be about £300.

Is there a way that anybody knows how I can transfer the NCB to the estate from the Car derived van. Also can I claim any NCB from being a named driver on anothers' policy?

cheers for any help

It seems as if my current insurers fro the van/car will not let me transfer the NCB to an estate unless I have owned the estate for more than a year.

    Has anybody else heard this?

    FYI post

it seems that some insurance companies will accept NCB earned on cars to be used for a van, but not all insurance companies will accept van NCB toward a car. ??????? err yes

what this means in practice is that if you have earned a full NCB, say 20+ years on a car, and then insure a van using that NCB. if you then renew that van policy at the end of the first year carrying forward the NCB. You will have lost ALL years NCB towards being able to insure a car again in the future.

Now to me it is a doddle to drive a car, what with 360 degree vision and comfy seats, music etc, just watch a car driver trying to manoeuvre and indeed reverse a van on just wings............err

I think there is some Car/Van discrimination going on here,.............. thank god I wasn't born a girly:)

  • I think this business of vans and car/derived vans needs to be clarified. When I insured my last van (Vauxhall Astravan 1.7 Petrol/LPG) it was insured under a fully comp motor vehicle policy which also allowed me to drive any other car with 3rd party cover. I didn't ask for the vehicle to be insured as such, but because it was classed as a Car/Derived van, the insurance company insured it as such. At the time, I thought the price very reasonable. I have now insured a different van (Vauxhall Combo 1.6 LPG/Petrol) which is still classed on the log book as a car derived van, but was forced to insure it as a van by the sales guys at Barry Grainger. This cost me nearly twice as much money, and I had my entitlement to drive other vehicles taken away. I just called my existing insurance companym and they told me that the companies they use do not insure vans as cars, and its down to the DVLA to sort out the descriptions of vehicles. Furthermore, they told me that if I tried to insure it as a car (Its also classed as a Vauxhall Corsa, it would be far more expensive). My last insurance company wouldn't even quote me on it!! What the hell goes on with these rip-off insurance companies, they make the rules up as they go along. I don't use my van for commercial purposes but I have had to insure it as though I did. Someone needs to take the insurance companies to task over this and get them to explain why lots of us are being forced into insuring our car derived vans on business/van policies rather than motor vehicle policies, and we are very rarely given ther choice. Ok sometimes its cheaper to insure a van on a comercial policy, but not by any means is that always the case.
