Senior cat food is balanced for an older cat. (i.e. less active/slower digestion/8yrs+)

If you are concerned, do you have a rescue centre nearby that you can donate the food to??

Firstly, I'm sorry about your sisters cat. Very sad indeed.

Secondly, and I don't mean to be harsh, just telling it like it is. Felix is such a bad food I doubt it'll matter if you feed the kitten, adult or senior. The actual food content will still be extraordinary low no matter what one you feed.

    Really?

Percy is my first cat and thats what the cat protection woman told us to feed him? I dont really know any better. He does however it appears seem to suppliment his own diet from the fields out back

He dosnt eat 'meat' - The food we have as a family chicken beef etc cooked or uncooked.

What should i be feeding him - he is a large cat

If he is eating felix because he likes it and he is healthy - glossy coat, not putting on / losing weight, teeth are good etc don't worry too much.

Demon cat is 11 years old, he will not eat anything other than felix agail range. Literally he will starve rather than eat anything else (apart from tomato soup!) - we had a 3 day stand-off with him locked in the house and he refused to eat anything else - not even fresh cooked chicken.

Yes some foods are better than others; some owners are very forthright in their opinion that unless you are feeding a natural / raw food / organic / non-commercial feed (always makes me smile, all cat food by it's nature is commercial) then you are at best a poor owner and at worst killing your cat.

Felix is a terrible food. But you don't know till you look into it. I fed it myself, until I started looking into pet foods etc.

    Here's the ingredients

Chicken: Chicken and Chicken Derivatives 4%, Fish and Fish Derivatives, Minerals, Various Sugars. Contains EC Permitted Colourant.

So 4% meat for an obligate carnivore, the rest is cereals and sugars, both of which a cat has no need for and can't properly digest, so will just come right out the other end. They throw a bit of colouring in to make it look like meat, and charge silly prices.

If he's supplementing his diet himself, that's good. But I'd still be outraged at paying the price of felix, for the ingredients. You can get MUCH better for the price. Animonda Carny is 99% meat and is around the same price as felix.

Check this thread out at petforums, if for no other reason than value for money.

Okay, I always advocate better foods for pets, but it's not about snobbery, people do the best they can with what they've got. It does irk me when people know they're feeding crap, CAN do something about it, but just don't. That's when I question how much they actually care about their pets. Just as I would a parent knowingly feeding their kid crap day in day out. I, like yourself, have an 11 year old cat, she wont touch wet food, no matter what it is, so I buy her a good dry and leave her too it, even though I'd rather she ate wet. She also wont touch anything with fish in. Wont touch raw. God, cats are fussy beggars. But I do the best I can for her with my budget and her fussiness. She does of course, love custard.....(yes I know she can't eat and and I don't give her it, but god she'll risk life and limb to sneak a sly lick if we have it).

But TBH, I truly hate being ripped off, and I feel that paying the prices charged by felix, go cat, whiskas, sheba etc, given the ingredients, is a complete rip off.

There's so little nutrition the makers of these foods should be shot. For the same price you can get better food, fact. So I can't justify people spending hard earned cash on crap (And that's not personal, your cat will only eat felix, like mine will only eat chicken flavour, it's a generalisation about cash saving).

  • A good food for its price is Classic. You can find it in most supermarkets. No cereals and they have recently changed their labelling to provide much better information

Rev, I wasn't having a pop at you (although I don't think you took it that way) I just felt that elff was obviously a new and quite nervous owner - nervous in that she wants to ensure she is doing right by her cat and just dropping that felix is bad, bad food (I don't disagree with you on that) would just increase her anxiety levels. As she gets to know her cat, she will, like we all did/do, try different foods which may be met enthusiastically; with utter disdain or simply ignored by cat!

As I said, if the cat is doing well and there are no health concerns then while getting used to the cat, changing diet isn't the highest priority. Cats have survived (and thrived) on cr*p food for decades. It's not something to make people lose sleep over - I know, I've been there but have had to accept demon cat just won't touch the "good" stuff.

I have in this forum in the past seen threads about cat/dog food where the anti-high street brigade were extremely aggressive with their views (no idea, if you were one of them and I'm not implying you were either and no intention to check, it's not that important) so much so that anyone who for whatever reason isn't following an organic 100% meat diet for their cats got the impression that they were about to be lined up against a wall and shot. IMO it's not that big an issue and it certainly isn't worth people getting super-heated about it.

And as for custard, at least it's dairy (lactose or no) and kind of expected for cats but demon cat's folly is tomato soup! :rotfl:
