  • I have a budgeting spreadsheet on which I record everything we spend - cash, credit card, bank account plus all income (including Quidco etc) It picks the information up by month, amount and category and automarically puts it into the summary. I then have a column which works out the difference between the last 2 months on each category, a narrative sheet to record why spend was high or low and an average for the year to date

I also have a spreadsheet for my Beavers which works out automatically when they have completed all the activities for any of the challenge badges

    I love Excel!

I was a book-keeper for 30 odd years , pre computer and some pre Biro (LOL), so more used to Analysis Books. 7cash columns type thingy. Use it for bank account and energy details.
BUT Martin I do have running records from l983 to l988, not a spreadsheet but just old noteb ooks. Just hooked one out, typical entry.... date, distance, time, pace, cumulative.
Remarks "passed a tractor", "XC", ankle!!. Don't suppose you get tractors in London. :-))

I have a spreadsheet for entering Competitions (from here on good old MSE!!) It has sheets to keep track of those I enter from the forum, for twitter and facebook, puzzle magazines, those running on a daily basis, those running on a monthly basis and weekly basis, a sheet for notes regarding which sites I've had to sign up to.

All the ones I enter from the forum are then put into a pivot table to show show many I've entered everyday.

I also have spreadsheets for my budget, one for holidays when I can't decide where to stay all the features are listed and compared.

Another to show my broadband speed at various times of the day.

Last one - one to show sites I visit for job searching!
Thanks to those that post the comps!!

  • My Dad reckons I'm a closet accountant. My 'main' sheet is my 5 year planned budget sheet (including all bills, accounts, savings, etc) which was inspired by MSE to help me get my spending under control (I also had a Snowball sheet while I was in debt to credit cards), and then I lop off each year as it finishes and store it. I also have yearly sheets for what I gave people for: Anniversarys, Birthdays and Christmas, and a Diary, plus an ongoing one for my energy usage and cost, and one for Addresses, Household Chores and Food (possible menu items with links to external recipes). My entire life, organised by one file. I'd be completely lost without it!

Never created and graphs/charts, never really needed to, but myabe I will ;o)

My husband and I share a google spreadsheet for our Finances.

First tab is the annual budget, with each expense listed and the amounts (or approximations) entered for each month.

Second tab is current month, and it has a running total of our bank account balance, along with expenses to be paid that month. So once an expense goes out, I just update the balance and delete that row. That way, we know how much money we'll have leftover at the end of that month.

Third tab tracks our budget and savings to date for any major events e.g. we have a big holiday planned in May.

    I have spreadsheets for:
Our Tesco Clubcard account :o - we collect points from different sources and I want to make sure they all get added!
Our Solar PV system - showing kWh generated each day/month - I do graphs from this one!
Our holiday - we do roadtrips so I like to keep track of accomodation booked etc for each night plus any pre-booked activities in different locations.
Family Budget - actual spend compared to estimated costs

I don't keep a spreadsheet for fuel consumption/costs though as I use fuelly.com for that and they do all the graphs for me! :D
2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shading
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

Martin I'm surprised you're not recording your running on http://www.fetcheveryone.com. The guy who runs it is just as mad about graphs and stats as you are. He even does a weekly email where he analyses everyone's stats to see how people train for different distances etc. It will also calculate your age graded performance for races and so on.

I don't really have many personal spreadsheets at the moment, just work ones. I did once do one to work out how long it would take me to pay off my student loan, but then I stopped bothering because it was so depressing.

I have a few spreadsheets in my Google Apps account to calculate things like mpg for my car and energy usage, but I rarely use the data to generate graphs for my personal spreasheets. I use Microsoft Money for storing my finances, but I have a few spreadsheets for some calculations that can't be stored in Microsoft Money.

At work I am the opposite, I love to create graphs from the database behind our business system - yet people still seem to prefer lists of data here!

I have a spreadsheet for absolutely everything (some of them are pretty sad too):
    • Combined budget planner, spending diary, utility bill calculator, PAYE tax/NI calculator and timesheet for work: one per academic year but they all link into each other
    • Interest calculator for savings accounts
    • List of Premium Bond wins (all two of them!!)
    • List of all journeys made with my railcard and how much money I've saved
    • List of all Cash ISA subscriptions, which a table showing how much I've subscribed each year and how much I've got left
    • List of total taxable income and tax paid per tax year
    • Ebay Sales and Ebay "profit" calculator
    • Amazon Sales
    • List of countries I've visited and approximate dates (very sad, I know)
    • List of all jobs I've had and approximate dates (even more sad)
    • Marks from all my uni work/assignments/exams with an encouraging calculator telling me how hard I have to work!
    • Plus Microsoft Money to keep a record of everything (some things will be recorded in two places because of this)
What an exciting life I live :D

Just the one excel spreadsheet for me, for personal finances. Tab for each of my bank accounts, plus the one tab that rules them all....

The current account tab also serves as a reminder of upcoming dates/events; isn't conditional formatting wonderful.

And yes I do back it up!
