You only have one actual reading in there, the rest are estimates, so it's a bit difficult to say what your actual usage has been. However, now they have an actual reading in there, you will get realistics figures going forward.
Your usage billed doesn't sound that outrageous really, given the amount of time you have had the heating on and the harsh weather we've had.
For example, my 4 bed house with heating on for about 9 hours on weekdays and 17 hours at weekends, plus gas hot water and gas hob used 4,343 kWh in gas from 21 Jan to 3 Mar. I have the house thermostat at 19 and no TVRs on the radiators, but the house is well insulated.

My first thought was.....was a meter reading taken when you took possession of the house?
My gas bills are similar though, about £40 per month, but my heating is on permanently owing to disability meaning getting cold from stting still.

Agree the bill is about £6 per day, which (with the heating on 12 hrs per day through the lowest December temp for decades) is hardly high.

  • Thanks for your replies. So it sounds about right then?
Im not working at the moment so British Gas have let me set up a weekly payment plan so I hope that I can catch up during the summer months when ive not got the heating on and maybe get in credit so im more prepared for next winter and just pray it's not another unusually cold one! x

If you really want to keep an eye on your usage from now on, take regular meter readings, like daily (at the same time) or weekly. Your bill should show you the formula used to convert the units used to kWh. Usage should significantly drop now as it's supposed to be getting warmer.

As others have advised, it's impossible to say for sure because we don't know your actual usage over the biliing period.

I'm afraid it's been a particularly cold Winter especially over the holiday period and I expect a lot of people will be getting similar 'shocks'! Gas is very expensive these days.
A problem shared is a problem multiplied. :o
