I think the way that people ask for money as wedding gifts is out of line. You shouldn't have to pay to attend a friends wedding and if you do choose to give a gift (including money) it should be a personal gesture not an expectation. Often on wedding invites people say to give money to "contribute to the wedding & honeymoon" - if they can't afford the wedding & honeymoon then they shouldn't have it. Asking people for money directly simply makes some people feel awkward especially when they don't have a lot to give.

But equally, I cannot understand why people are saying they give gifts which are say £50 if they are a day guest and £10 for an evening invite, as if they are entering into some kind of transaction based on how much they are getting out of the day.

If I go to a wedding, I decide what to spend on their gift/gift vouchers/cash gift based on my closeness to them and my cash situation at that moment. What I am getting out of it doesn't come into it.

I do like it when people give me an idea of what to get them (just as I do at Christmas etc.) because I would rather give my money to be useful than spend it on some trinket or duplicate which will sit in the cupboard for all eternity or make it's way into a charity shop. If they have said that cash is what they would want as they have most of the normal things, then so be it.

I agree that if somebody DEMANDED money for their wedding I would be a bit miffed, but have never seen anybody do this - what kind of people do you all know?

    **rant over** :D

Neighbours got married in Las Vegas and had a party afterwards. I gave £30.
