Bank Account without a card

My girlfriend and I moved in together end of October last year and decided to get a joint bank account with barclays (she is a barclays customer i was with hsbc).

The account is primarily to put a small amount of money into each month to pay the bills from - however when it was setup there was an initial problem adding me to the account so they put it in her name and added me after. As a result she got the debit card and cheque book sent to her and i didnt get a thing - we complained numerous times to the bank and i still have no debit card 4 months later.

What rights do i have for this and if they try to set a new account up for us, is there anything they can do to help as we already have our bills setup to go out of the account we already have.

Look forward to hearing from you as im getting quite annoyed with them for this...

    Welcome to MSE.

I would contact Barclays to find out if they have been sent out, to what address, and when it was sent. Did you get a letter from Barclays in response to your complaint? It may be that there is a reason for you not receiving it.
    Best Regards

    What rights do i have
    1. The right to complain.
    2. The right to ask for a modest amount of compensation for the bank's failure to act (actually you could ask for an obscenely large amount if you wanted).
    3. The right to escalate to the FOS if the bank fails to deal with the complaint to your satisfaction.

If you've hit the barriers several times with them I'd suggest one final letter via their complaints office asking them to resolve it within 14 days and to compensate you.

If they fail, go to the FOS.
  • Thanks for the replies, I have a meeting with the bank manager this afternoon so I will ask for it to be settled within 14 days then see what compensation I can get and take it to FOS if necessary

Failing that elect to use HSBC for your future banking endeavours instead of Barclays.

HSBC are by far and away the better bank to be with compared against Barclays. Having gone through nearly every high street bank in recent years I rate their service the highest.

Of course, First Direct are the pinnacle of what they do but they don't offer face to face banking where HSBC do.

  • yeah our option was to say we'll wait and see what happens but open a backup hsbc joint account and gradually change our bills over to that account

but i'm up for a fight to get barclays sorted...
