Exhaust problems
Hi there
I have a 10 year old Nissan Primera - recently on a fairly long trip I noticed that a long hair-like substance was trailing from the exhaust. I googled this and found out that it was the soundproofing from around the exhaust back box that was coming out. At one point I had quite a long "tail" that I could see from my wing mirror and had to stop to pull it out.
I stopped by a small independent tyre/exhaust place on the route. The mechanic there asked me if I was getting any other problems with the exhaust, and I said no. He just told me to let it come out and not to worry about it unless I started noticing any problems affecting the driving or the exhaust blowing etc.
Naturally, I tend to trust mechanics when they tell me not to have work done, as they are clearly not acting in their own interests...
Questions:
1. Do you agree with what the mechanic said?
2. The MOT will be due fairly soon. Will it cause me problems with that?

Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

Yes (1) and no (2), it seems that he gave good advice.0

Just make sure that before you take the car for the MOT you remove any of the offending material that may be loose and visible.
It shouldn't be a reason for the car to fail the test, but you may just get an MOT inspector who notices it and decided that in their opinion the exhaust has degraded and needs to be replaced.0 -
You noticed it getting louder?0

Thanks - that's put my mind at rest. I can't say I've really noticed that it's louder, it's just rather disconcerting to have this stuff coming out of the exhaust. When I first saw it I thought someone had stuffed a wig up there as some sort of practical joke.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
