Depends if they want an internet based account, if so I would say Smile now FD have introduced charges, high street account, most people seem to recommend the Alliance and Leicester

Until they get an account with them and have a problem with it that is...
  • I wouldn't call Smile a basic account - you need to put in at least £1000 a month!!!

  • Does Cahoot need a minimum amount going in each month? If not it seems good.

I don't think I have heard of banks accepting pay slips as proof of ID, though I think a driver's lisence would be OK.

I've just opened a Cahoot current account. There's no minimum amount or salary requirement, they just ask if you will be paying your salary into the account.

I had to send them a statement from my current bank and a utility bill as proof of address.

Actually you don't need to deposit £1k a month in a Smile account, you only have to to this to get the fee free overdraft, debit card etc.

Can you find this on the smile website - everywhere I look says you need the £1000 monthly.

Why don't you get her to try Yorkshire/Clydesdale if she has a branch closeby?
    Their basic account has Maestro(Switch).

Failing that Co-op, Nationwide or NatWest?

Woolwich also do a card saver account with a Visa Electron card, I don't think it will let her do direct debits, but most other stuff. It has 3% interest rate, if I recall too.
