Patchy paintwork over new plaster?

Hi there

I just bought a new house and the walls in the bedroom had been recently replastered by the previous owners. I had noticed that there were streaks on some of the walls in the paintwork. The walls are all matt magnolia and have these weird streaks of 'shiny' areas. At first I was worried they were damp, but they are definitely bone dry, s I am assuming they are to do with the painting of the plaster.

I had assumed my own paint would cover the marks, but unfortunately, the chimney breast I've just repainted in a darker colour, still shows these marks, although now, instead of looking 'shiny', they look a slightly darker shade than the rest of the chimney - almost looks like a damp patch if you see what I mean.

Any ideas? I want to repaint the other walls at some point - probably in a white silk.

Yes it sounds like incompetant painting by the previous owner. You need a obliterator over the lot first.

Any particular reason for silk finish?

Should be able to just sand it down then repaint?

What on Earth is an obliterator?!

I usually go for silk because it wipes clean (two mucky kids) although I do actually prefer the look of matt.

    Something like Crown Basecoat.

Try Dulux Endurance in one room - see if you like it. Very tolerant of mucky kids. :D
