Where to begin.....

.....my partner has decided 'she was never in love with me' (!!!!!! that mean, shame she didn't decide this 3 years earlier before I transferred jobs & got made redundant), but anyway.

I have notice from the landlord to leave by May 1st, as a new lease will be in my partner's name only.

I am currently on JSA (but to confuse it, it sounds like I might have a job 2 weeks from now - except that not getting paid for a month isn't going to get me out of here now, which is what she really wants.)

Apart from the fact I'm devastated as it is, I am scared I am going to end up homeless, especially if the job doesn't come off.

Reading up on what help is (or more likely, isn't) available,
do I apply for anything? Crisis Loan? Budgeting Loan? Community Grant?

I've got nothing to set up a new home with - there's a child involved & you can't exactly leave them without when splitting.

As it stands, we haven't formally split yet - but she is adamant that it is both what she wants & no going back on it.

What do I do???
Fog on The Tyne isn't mine all mine... but if I wanted it, I'd want it with a discount code.

Is the child going to live with you or your partner?
  • Not me, unfortunately. 2nd time my child has been taken away from me. I also have a 13 year old daughter. :(

If you find a property to rent you can apply for a crisis loan, they may be able to help with a deposit, go to your local council offices and register as homeless and for social housing (based on your own circumstances you probably won't go high on the list but worth it)

Find out the Local Housing Allowance rates for your area so you know what price range you will be looking for regarding property, you will come under 1 bedroom rate and not sure of your age.

Once you have found a property, apply for Housing Benefit/Council Tax Benefit and you may seek assistance by completing a Community Care Grant if receiving Income Based JSA/IS for help with household goods (see link)

With regards to work check with your personal adviser, there is a fund ADF which may help with clothes, travel etc. If you have been unemployed for 26 weeks continuously you will receive £100 as well as outstanding JSA entitlement, you may qualify for a run on of 4 weeks HB (LHA) and CTB

You will be entitled to Working Tax Credits in your own right if you find employment of 30 hours plus and are 25, request a claim pack from HMRC 0845 300 3900 as soon as you know you will be starting.

I wish you all the best with the change of direction in your life and hope all goes well.
Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.
  • So I need to find the property first? And move in with nothing? It's like a vicious downward spiral.....

..... at least the first time, I still had my job. ;(

Just to remind you, you may receive help, there is no guarantee, they will look at your circumstances and decide if this is a priority case.

Single parents, disabled, elderly and hardship tend to be highest priority.

You do need to find a property first as they aren't likely to give a £4-600 crisis loan on a whim and then move in before applying for a CCG as one criteria is hardship and struggling to maintain a home without assistance, they may feel a budgeting loan is all they can help with which will have to be paid back from benefits as well as crisis loan.

Do you have a local credit union, it may be a good idea to open an account and they may be able to help with a low repayment emergency loan for white goods.

You can also rent fully furnished, I don't know what area you are but in most cities, the smaller the property the more likely it is to come furnished. Private rentals will nearly always have white goods.

And, of course in the longer term if the OP is under 25 (soon to be 35).
