Lol, too late! We're bookedinto the Avanti village in Paphos & I think we made the right decision for us (the Alex was £600 more & we felt it wasn't worth it this time). We're not looking for beaches so doesn't worry us, and the time shares are easy enough to avoid - we did in Malta.

We couldn't get to the Greek islands Mababejive - if you read back we want to fly out before 1st May which is when the island season starts so Cyprus was our only option.

I'm really happy with what we've chosen & will now look at the car hire as we won't have a rep/options of excursions.

Well at least the hotel/complex has rave reviews on tripadvisor so thats good :)

Bits i did enjoy in Cyprus...drove into Troodos mountains etc, visited the capital-saw weird divided no mans land, drove south and saw some nice beaches towards Akrotiri, Afrodites rock etc etc, met some pleasant Cyriot peeps, mainly in shops but then they would be nice when you are giving them money.

Wont be going back again though..been there, done that.

    Have a good holiday..:):):):):):):):)
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
  • Excellent choice on Paphos! I have been to visit there many times now, my brother & his wife live there about 20 mins from Paphos centre, on the road to Polis.
I've driven past the Alexander the Great hotel many times, often wondered what it was like in there. The beach is directly next door to the hotel & it's a free car park, then a 2 min walk down to the beach. It's so lovely not having to worry about parking in places, even though some main roads do seem to require you to buy a parking ticket, I have never bought one!...never seen a traffic warden either ;-)

There's so many nice things to do and see in Paphos. Some nice beaches and the harbour area is nice to walk around, be it in the day or in the evening. Try and visit Aphrodite's Rock if you can, it's quite splendid. Also the Akamas National Park is wonderful - but I think you do need a reasonable vehicle to get about in there as the terrain is quite rough.

Definitely need to hire a car there, you have a lot more freedom. It is easy driving around, as they drive on the same side of the road as us, also the signs seem quite straightforward. Mind you Cypriot drivers are quite erratic and seem to do as they please, so be warned! As mentioned by a previous poster, there are a lot of hills and steep inclines in Paphos, so if you can get a slightly more powerful car then you would do better. I've hired a car in Paphos twice now from this place https://www.anyairportcarhire.com - I only booked the most basic manual car I could get, but both times when I went to collect the vehicle I was upgraded to a more powerful automatic car, free of charge - so was really pleased with that (must have got lucky!). I think the agent I got it from was called Oasis or something, quite near to the airport.

Anyway i hope you have a wonderful holiday, Paphos is beautiful - I love it so much, can't wait to go back soon for a visit!!

Well as I was the first to suggest Paphos , better defend the place after C_Mababejive post .
I was not struck with the beach , but the OP did not require a beach. Yes the dreaded Time share mob tries it on .......... but we all are wise to those games.
I like the scratch cards best , win the first one , then tell them you will bet that the next is also a winner!
    hardly any decent restaurants,
Well they do me. But will admit to a simple taste. Steak / chicken etc with a salad ,
Try the Edelweiss restaurant, more towards the high st for the Meza

    Have a great holiday.

Whatever you do,dont put Paphos on your list.

There are no decent beaches, its awash with Essex boys and girls flogging time shares, there are hardly any decent restaurants, the place is like a building site with apartments and homes being built to be flogged to mug punters.
    A total sh%t hole.
You;d be better off in the Greek islands or Turkey.

Wouldn't have put it quite like that, but you're so very right! I think Tomb of the Kings Road is the current mega road block in Paphos! Mercifully, the relentless construction of concrete boxes has slowed down because hardly anyone is going to Cyprus these days.
Just got back from Istanbul, Antalya, Side and Alanya.
Turkey is an absolutely stunning country.

Booked again for Lara beach for this year but spent July 2009 In Side. Thought Paphos was better than Side, far too crowded, the wide steep High St was packed , the shops were dismal. But will say the hotels are wonderful.

We go to Cyprus most years and stay in a village called P.i.s.s.ouri in the wine growing Lemesos district, but it's actually closer to Paphos, approx 15 mins drive to the airport. It is a mountain village, split into two halves, !!!!ouri Beach/Bay where there is a luxury resort called columbia beach and numerous bars and tavernas & offers excellent watersports facilities, but we stay in the main village approx 3kw away which is a traditional cypriot village with small narrow winding streets and a beautiful village square with bars, tavernas and amenities like a mini supermarket, banks, coffee shop etc. Its mainly ex pats, retirees and locals, not a tourist place at all, but its absolutely gorgeous. Being high up it gets a wonderful breeze and amazing views over the Akrotiri peninsualar. If you dont end up staying here, give it a visit one evening to enjoy the sunset, then watch the moon rise and have a wonderful evening in the square.

Paphos is nice, especially old Paphos, the old town and harbour, great to sit at a cafe on the harbour front and watch the boats come and go, our favourite is a the Hobo Cafe, expensive but a great treat to have a latte and a cake on their lovely designer furniture! We found Coral Bay to be cheap, tacky and very "blackpool", not the real cyprus by any stretch.

Hope you enjoy Cyprus, we fell in love with the people and the island, there is so much to see and do. As others have said, even if you choose to go all inclusive in a hotel, hire a car, even if only for a few days to get out and explore, a trip up to the Troodos, or to Latsi where you can enjoy fresh fish caught that day (our favourite is the Latchi Tavern, spans two halves of the main road )

    Yamas

    CC limits £26000

    Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

    Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.

Yes a wonderful place, the waiters dodging the traffic.
