Ventilation through a chimney

Greetings all,

I am about to start decorating the living room in the next couple of weeks now we have a shoddy wooden fireplace and hearth I want to get rid off as we now have central heating and removing it would create more room and enable us to plan the room better.

Would it be ok to remove this and plasterboard the hole in and then plaster skim to match the rest of the wall ready for painting?

Are there any regulations that says the chimney has to be ventilated?

Regards

I believe its in your interest to ensure chimney is ventilated, but you could just fit a ventilated cap on the chimney (I think) Thats what I've done anyway. Had C-caps fitted. Don't think it needs ventilating at floor level also if your closing it up....but sure someone will be along who knows more than I do...

Vent it at groundfloor level, otherwise the damp will build up in it from rainfall. Does not need a big vent.

I would fit a vent that can be removed to clear any fall of soot. This can happen when a flue is no used

Leave a hole in your brickwork a course or so above the skirting board level and cover it with one of these:

after decorating. Its called a hit and miss. They come in plastic, brass, aluminium etc to suit your decor. If you've painted walls the plastic ones will take a coat or two of emulsion so can be disguised effectively.
