Tried a few restarts, using the F8, and F10 keys, but no joy. The F12 key does a boot.
I have been trying to trick the thing into letting me run MB but no joy.
Is there any other way to get into safe mode?

    Andy

Youve kept pressing F8 (as in clicking away at it, not just pressing down on it)?

First of all, thanks to everyone for the replies.
Rik, yes, I have been tapping away at it, and no joy.

    Another strange thing.
I have a lot of photos stored, and a lot of RAW images.
When I try to open Image Data Converter by any standard method - desktop, computer programmes, the PC will not let me. If I go to one of my RAW files and click on it, IDC will open OK.
So, Is this a virus/trojan or the PC protecting itself?

    • Close all open programs.
    • Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
    • The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted.
    • The computer restarts in Safe mode.

    • When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" and click OK to restart your computer

    Update.
Managed to get into "safe mode", and ran Malwarebytes, and did a scan (boot scan) with Avast. MWB initially picked up 1 Trojan, Avast nothing. I then started the PC up in normal mode, updated MWB fully, and ran another scan - 8 more objects found.
All the programmes seem to run normally, so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Big, big thanks to AlienRIK and everyone else who helped me.

Dont just assume that because you can now run things that the computer is free of nasties

Please open malwarebytes, goto LOGS and post the WHOLE of 'both' logs

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)

Why do so many recommendations for action ignore the 'sytem restore' method?

I actually did a system restore back to 22nd February, then ran all the scans, then shutdown the PC, rebooted, and updated Malwarebytes and did another scan.
