fluff in washing machine

My machine is covering everything with a fine fluff at the moment, which is a particular nuisance on dark items. I'm having to let them dry & give them a good brush, which isn't ideal.

Any ideas how I can cure this? I've tried putting a really hot wash through the machine to rinse it all out, and have of course cleared out the "fluff filter", but the problem persists.

Sounds like there might be a paper hankie stuck in there somehow or that the machine isn't draining completely before it takes in more water. Have you checked that the drain-hose hasn't become kinked or something?

If you've run it empty more than once I fear it might be time to call in an engineer.

    Hmmm... possible :)

If so it will be caught up somewhere between the inner tub that holds the washing and the outer one.

Unless the OP has a maintenance contract that engineer's call will be an expensive one... he'll have to remove the entire tub assembly, seperate the inner from the outer, clean up the mess, and then reassemble and refit. Plus he may need to replace a seal.

    That's a lot for a possible diagnosis.

IF it's a paper hanky, or napkin... it will disintegrate over time and the problem will fade away. There IS the possibility that it will break free and be a big enough clump to block the outlet drain hose or the pump... but that's a much simpler and cheaper thing to deal with IF it happens.

No easy answer to this one, really. Sorry.

would it be worth putting a load of soda crystals/vinegar in and running it empty on a 90 wash and then on a completely cold wash - does seem a way to waste electricity, but it might help clear out lurking fluff.

I thought it sounded like tissue or paper left in a pocket, is that possible?

Probably was originally, but there's no visible trace of anything like that now - until you do a dark wash & see the clothes!

have tried that & looked at all accessible tubes etc, but its still happening.

I hope the person that suggested it will just go over time is correct, as I don't really want to call out an engineer. Everything is working fine & it is so costly.

    Thanks for all the replies.

For the time being I'd wash anything not white inside-out. I do this to all of my clothes anyway to ensure that any wear from the machine isn't visible on the outside.
