So you have 24/7 less 2pm sat - 7am sun call that 2 shift

    So 19 8 hr shifts per week * 52 = 988

1 person with 5 8hr shifts can do 46.4 weeks so 232 shifts

That means 4.26 full time equivilents.

Problem is there are no breaks or handover in the schedule.

Going to a 48hr 6 day week 278.4 shifts per person so 3.55 full time equivilents.

If overtime cover on a 40hr week is going to be compulsory you want to try to get holiday pay for it.

Has anyone actually sat down with the boss and done the maths? I can't see any reason not to employ a flexible part timer to cover holidays and sickness, there are plenty of people wanting part time work. It only takes a person to be off with flu for 2 weeks whilst someone else is on holiday and it'll all go wrong.

OK how does this sound..? You work for a company which operates a system of days/shifts and callout all on a rota arrangement.

If you go off sick and someone covers your shift, that person claims a wad of cash which is deducted from your pay packet.

If you need to book a holiday, you have to find someone to cover the time off before it is allowed.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

And your point is? That's how shift work is.

You assume a working week of 5 days. The working time regs permit a single rest day within the working week.
Or 2 days every 2 weeks

    Weekly rest - the 'weekend'

If you are an adult worker you have the right to either:
    • an uninterrupted 24 hours clear of work each week
    • an uninterrupted 48 hours clear each fortnight
    Have a nice day :)

I'm quite happy doing my 35 hours and want to know can they force me to do extra hours on my rest days and holidays when someone else is sick
I suppose its time to invest in a PAYG mobile and make sure that number is on your contact file at work and when you have a day off or are on leave then make sure its turned off.

You need X amount of days notice to change your plans, child care, elderly parents etc etc makes it difficult for you to change plans at short notice.
