What is good cheap car to run - cost up to 5k?

Hi there, I'm looking to buy a good second-hand car that is as cheap as possible to run - ideally low fuel consumption and low or no tax.

It needs to be reliable and low maintenance. We do very low mileage, it will mainly be used for driving children around and the occasional supermarket trip.

We have up to £5k to spend.

All advice very welcome.

What size of car are you looking for, is something like a Kia Picanto too small? (only has 4 seats in the lower spec models)

Ideally more than 4 seats - I will also use it to take my parents places. They are quite frail and wouldn't be able to squeeze into a tiny space, it has to be big enough for them to get in and out easily!
