You use vista. Did you upgrade from xp to vista or has the computer always had vista on?

The thing I find puzzling is that vista doesnt have 'documents and settings' in c drive
Only XP does. Is there a USERS folder in c drive?

    The computer was bought new?

Yes, I have found the users file.
The laptop was new, with Vista preloaded.

So if you go into users, look for usernames and see if there are documents in there (sounds to me like it is an upgraded XP machine)

After a security upgrade I can access documents under my daughter's username. It's the Admin documents that it won't let me into (not that I think there is anything in there bar that rogue file).
BTW it's a 2 year old Dell Inspiron.
