X-Fi Go - stereo mix greyed out, why?

Hi
I listen to live audio streams (ham radio) and also run a decoding program alongside which the audio is fed in to and decodes the tones in the audio. I have no problems at all doing this via the 'what u hear' tab on my tower PC which runs a SBL 24bit card. Likewise no problems using the onboard SoundMAX card on HP 6720s laptop either.
What I want to do is to use a higher quality card on my laptop as the SoundMAX makes the audio sound rough vs. the SBL 24bit card on my tower, so I bought an X-Fi Go but I can't get it to work.
The audio is playing and the decoder program is receiving the signal okay, but I'm not hearing anything. What I want to happen is for the audio to come out of the laptop speaker. I've tried every possible setting in the volume control but when I go to the 'X-fi Go What u Hear' option, the stereo mix remains greyed out on the recording tab. Can someone explain to me what I need to do/where I'm going wrong please? Is it even possible to use the laptop's own speaker when using one of these usb cards or do I need to hook up some external speakers to it?
Thanks.
